THE SCIENCE

ANTISEPTICE PROPERTIES

All types of honey have antiseptic properties due to their high sugar content and acidic pH, which prevent bacterial growth. They also contain hydrogen peroxide, a chemical compound created by an enzyme deposited by bees in the nectar.

WHY MANUKA HONEY

We’ve chosen to use Manuka Honey in our dermo-cosmetic formulas because Manuka Honey IAA® contains unique antiseptic properties, recognized and studied by the scientific community, which are not attributed to hydrogen peroxide.

PROVEN bY
SCIENTIFIC STUDIES

In the 1980s, Professor Peter Molan from the University of Waikato in New Zealand conducted studies on over 300 types of honey. He discovered that some Manuka honeys possess an additional activity, unrelated to hydrogen peroxide, which remains effective within the human body.

Professor Molan developed a laboratory test to classify Manuka honey based on its activity level. The activity level of honey depends on its region of origin.

10+ To 15+ IAA RATINGS

New Zealand consists of two islands, the North Island and the South Island. The most active honeys are found in the north of the country. That’s why each production is analyzed by an independent laboratory responsible for determining the activity level of Manuka honey.

Later, in the 2000s, Professor Henle discovered the molecule partly responsible for this activity: methylglyoxal (MGO).

His studies showed that some Manuka honeys can contain up to 700mg of methylglyoxal per kilogram, a concentration 70 times higher than in conventional honey. Its exceptional concentration of methylglyoxal gives Manuka honey its antibacterial and protective action, promoting the repair of the skin’s outer layers.

OUR IAA® COMMITMENT

Through extensive research, we have established an equivalency to the MGO index, allowing us to precisely measure the antibacterial activity of Manuka honey and ensure its authentic New Zealand origin: the IAA® index.

The activity of Manuka honey used in our formulations is scientifically guaranteed by this index, recognized in France and Europe.

We prioritize the use of honey from warm and humid regions in the north for their higher activity levels. As a result, our formulas contain IAA® 10+ and 15+ indices.

Our use of the IAA® index is based on adherence to four fundamental principles:

  1. Systematic testing of non-peroxide activity in honey by independent laboratories, guaranteeing the unique activity of each batch.
  2. Scientific analyses ensuring the authenticity and botanical origin of wild Manuka honey from New Zealand, its native territory.
  3. Direct sourcing from rigorously selected New Zealand beekeepers, known for their excellent work.
  4. Flawless traceability of products from hive to finished product*.
